HISTORY of the Foran House:
Jean Delisle (1850s): Jean Delisle, a lawyer who settled in
Aylmer in the early 1850s, used this wooden house--built
with 35-centimeter-thick hand-hewn logs (which can still be
seen in the kitchen)--as his law office.
John Murphy (mid-1860s): John Murphy was a shoemaker who
set up his shop in the southwest corner of the residence.
According to sources, he also worked for the river shipping
company Union Forwarding as a boat captain and bookkeeper.
When the brand-new Regional Courthouse opened just a
stone's throw from his home, he became the first warden of
the prison. Mr. Murphy lived at 12 Broad for over thirty
years.
John Foran (1883): John Foran, an Irish immigrant, arrived
in Aylmer in 1829 and quickly became a prosperous lumber
merchant. His social role is also noteworthy; a justice of
the peace for several years, he was one of the first
elected councilors of the new village of Aylmer in 1847. He
purchased the property in 1883 to live there.
Recognition: The house is listed in the Répertoire du
patrimoine culturel du Québec, which means it has been
identified as a site of interest: the John Foran House has
recognized heritage value, but it is not automatically
protected by law.
